TITLE: BUFFALO SOLDIERS: A BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPECIAL
BROADCAST WINDOW: January 16 – March 8, 2009
BARTER SPLIT: 7 minutes national/7 minutes local
HOST: Joe Brown
DESCRIPTION: BUFFALO SOLDIERS is the story of a courageous group of men and one woman who served this country beginning with the American expansion into the West as well as the heroic service in numerous wars and conflicts including the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II and the Korean conflict.
At first, these units were not very effective. They were poorly trained and even more poorly equipped. To make matters worse, not all of the Army’s command believed in the “experiment”. The black soldiers would find themselves fighting racism as much as they did Indians. Yet, they would not give up. They were determined to succeed. The combat prowess, bravery, tenaciousness, and looks on the battlefield, inspired the Indians to call them "Buffalo Soldiers." Many Indians believe the name symbolized the Native American's respect for the Buffalo Soldiers' bravery and valor.
This Black History month special highlights some of these men and woman whose efforts and sacrifices helped advance not just Black history but American history.
